This bronze ancient coin weighs 3.69 g. I can recognize it is Islamic from the Arabic lettering, but I cannot determine the era and mint or other details because I am no expert at all. I wish some fellow members could assist me in this respect. Thank you. Charles
I don't recognize your coin. FYI- Islamic is an adjective relating to or supporting Islamism. Do you read Arabic? I do not read Arabic (other than numbers) & am uncertain what language is written on the coin.
Hi. Of course I read Arabic well and I'm a translator. Note that in historic terms, the Islamic era stretches from the early Arab Islamic invasion in the seventh century till the end of The Mamluks who were defeated by the Turks, the founders of the Ottoman Empire in the late 15th century,I think. So the period of the Ottoman Empire does not belong to the Islamic era, albeit it was the greatest Islamic Sultanate or Empire in History. In Numismatics, conventional definitions might perhaps differ sometimes. Charles
I don't read Arabic well, but it's not so difficult to recognize the kalima in the upper picture, so definitely Islamic. I would guess that the other side should show part of the shahada, but can not make it out. Might the lower picture be upside down ? The style and script is later than early Umayyad or Abbasid Kufic, but can not give you a definite attribution.
Thanks THC.. At least I now understand that it is not an early Islamic coin. The lower picture may not be well positioned. Maybe someone could guess a clearer attribution to this thread. Charles
Someone with more knowledge on these than I told me I was probably wrong. The style could fit well with a Umayyad fals from al-Jazirah. Closest i could fit from Zeno: http://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=43248
Great. I owe you THC. The coin dates back to the Umayyad reign between the seventh and eighth century AD. It was minted in the city of Harran. Also the lower picture was upside down, as you said. Charles
