I have the feeling it's a very rare coin. Weighing 8.08 g.it has a strange signal on reverse. Hope someone is familiar with this type of coins. Sign R.JPG Signal O.jpg

The first image up was shot with a digital camera, whereas the second down was a mere scan. It's the same coin (obverse and reverse). The scan of obverse was much better than shot by my digital camera. Any comment ?

Need to try again on the images. The camera shot is too unfocused to get much information and the scanner image's resolution too low.

I believe the legend next to the thunderbolt reads Seluko so I'd start searching for Seleucid bronzes with thunderbolts (not a subject I'm into so I can be of no help).

Thanks.. So the strange signal ( To me) is a mere thunderbolt. I'll be checking on Wildwinds.

Charles, Wildwinds is great but I find it much easier to first check CNG's archives. Their search engine is quite good-- much easier to use than Wildwinds.

For instance, go to CNG's archives (the "research" tab) and enter "Seleukid, AE, thunderbolt". Cropped screen shot below:

Click "Find". The results are sorted into heading, one heading for the Coin Shop hits, one for Printed Auctions, etc, so be sure to click each of those links to see all of the coins. Cropped screen shot showing the result of the search terms listed above:

In this instance, using the rather broad search terms, most of the coins will not be relevant, such as the coin shown above. A quick scroll through the results does show some likely matches for yours though. Check them out, narrow it down, and then go to Wildwinds and other sources to look for more.

Also, a thunderbolt (or winged thunderbolt) is also called a "fulmen", so you can try using that search term instead of thunderbolt if you're not getting good hits in whichever database you're searching.
