My mom in law gave us a cookie tin of pennies(USA) from far back as 1871. Can someone tell me how to find a honest person who can look at them and tell me thier values. Thanks.
Welcome to the forum. First do NOT clean any of the coins. Then start here: Determing Value Second: Go Here: Coin Facts Third: Go to your book store and buy this: The 2006 edition is now out. Educate yourself a little bit first on what you have and then report back to us what you have, and then we will advise. Also another thing...everybody new thinks their coins are in "excellent" condition. Read the Red Book section of your coins to get an idea of differant grades before getting excited about seeing values in the highest grades (columns all the way to the right).
Depending on were you live there should be a coin dealer you can take them to for a value. I would suggest going to more then one or to a local coin show and get several opinions on the grade and value of them if you are not sure of a dealer near you. This way you will not be taken advantage of. Unfortunatly there are dealers out there that will buy coins for alitte bit on nothing that are worth big money. If you are wanting to sell them, the price a dealer will offer you for them will be less than the selling price, that is how they make there profit so they can stay in business.
The red book is nice because it has a lot of good info but remember the prices are RETAIL prices...most dealers sell at less than those prices. If you're more interested in a book that will show about what you could sell the coins for...in other words WHOLESALE pricing, you should try the BLUE book...same author and publisher, same info, just more realistic prices. Good luck and have fun looking through all those coins! tradernick
