Hey i was wondering if you guys could help me out, as you guys may know i just began coin collection. Im in school atm the moment so kinda hard to type, anyways Can you guys tell me somethings i need for a beginning coin collection Such as books gloves, and other necessities. anything will be helpful, thanks!
Hi, welcome to CT: You should have: a Redbook (coin value guide) White cotton gloves or a cheaper alternative are powder free latex gloves (both can be purchased at local drug store) A magnifying glass and a jewelers loupe for the really close up views. 2x2 carboard holders to store your coins, or albums. Good lighting. Patience. Thats a good start!
yeah i think i need a lot more patience and luck :/ Went through 400$ half dollars, and found no silver :c
Are you looking just for silver to resell? Gbroke covered the basics. Also find a local coin shop to go check out.
You're sitting in class typing questions about coins. Wow. That is HUGE!! Sounds like you really got the "Coin Bug!" I'm lovin it! Wish I had started this hobby when I was much younger. Anyway, there are some threads on this site regarding roll searching. Might check them out. Gbroke and Moonshine covered things pretty well. Are you for the most part just interested in silver and roll searching or are there other coin directions you're interested in exploring? Knowing that, will assist us in helping you with your questions. Hey, if you're in a college class, tell all the pretty girls I said hello! :hail: (Just kidding)
Well i don't have much money, so i just check to rolls then take them back and get my money back, I like mostly old coins to be honest, the newer ones just don't appeal to me. I don't have much but, im trying to put a nicer one to be honest, My coins i like most are All halfdollars Buffalo nickels Indian head pennies and i'll tell them tommorow !
I'm not trying to be a smart a$$, but coin collecting should be a hobby, first and foremost. To be able to support this hobby, you need a good job. In order to get a good job, you need to do the best you can in school. While you're in school, concentrate on your studies instead of coins. Good luck! Chris
well i have a 4.0 GPA, and have had a 4.0 over the last three years, so i doubt i need to study more. just saying.
Don not use latex gloves for handling coins. Use the 100% cotton white gloves, they're not that expensive; $.99. http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/products/coin-handling-equipment/ Redbook is good for an informational guide, their price guide is 20% over FMV.
When you do buy, save up and buy quality from the beginning. It's better to have 3 MS-65 or PR-70 coins in your collection than 150 AG-3s. Common coins in poor condition will never increase in value.
