2001 penny from a roll. At first, I thought it was just PMD. But the design is all through the areas, even the VDB. The areas are deep, not raised. So, I guess the planchet was damaged before the strike???

Well, the more I looked at it, and the reverse, it was definitely smashed somehow with something. PMD for sure. Also, the edges of the areas wouldn't be so fine if it was struck on a damaged planchet. I'm learning.

That is a damaged coin. It’s suffered a lot in its short life.

You didn't show the reverse, so I'm going with PMD, as the others above have.
