Hey all. I'm pretty comfy with many series of U.S. coins, but wanted to ATTEMPT to start up a strictly Scottish set. My Dad is of Scottish ancestry, and thought I'd try to put something together for him (he just retired, maybe I can get him into the hobby to kill some time, and stop thinking about killing my mom [a joke...for now...lol], as she just retired too, so.....lol). I have NO clue as to ANYTHING related to Scotland, except that Edinburgh is it's capitol and it's close in proximity to England and Ireland. So, that'll tell you I'm totally void of numismatic knowledge for that country. Any help with suggested books/articles, dealers...are these coins heavily counterfeited....anything to get me going so I can make educated decisions when it comes time to purchase would be greatly appreciated. I understand something like this will require more than just reading a grade on a slab and looking to see if I agree with the grade, as I'd imagine most are raw, requiring much more knowledge. Feel free to add comments here, or message me. Thanks in advance, all!!!
hi, i dont know much but i can tell you Scotland has its own notes, however there are not current coinage specifically for scotland, so you would have to be searching for pre-decimal coins i live near the scot/eng. border i we always get scottish notes up here, though ive never had the hindsight to keep any
the 1984 & 1989 have thistles on the reverse representing Scotland and apparently the 2004 has the Forth Brdige on it(havent been to England or Scotland since the mid/late nineties so havent seen the 04 coin) - that is probably the closest you will get to current scottish coins as they use the standard british coins. As rich notes. they do have bank of scotland bank notes
In terms of modern money, the £1 coins have been mentioned - this is the 2004 "Forth Bridge" piece: http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/pics/dec/100/1pd04r.jpg Could be interesting to get a matching Bank of Scotland £20 (2007) note: http://aes.iupui.edu/rwise/banknotes/scotland/ScotlandPNew-20Pounds-2007-donatedfvt_b.jpg Also, the latest issue in this year's "UK capital cities" series features Edinburgh: http://www.royalmint.com/web/productImages/UK11BP_3.jpg Christian
You're Lucky I Saw This in the Recent Threads... ...because here on CT I usually just view the paper money side. Yeah, I know a wee bit about Scots cunyie, have collected them since I was a kid. No, not the garden variety British issued post 1707 stuff - but the Kingdom of Scotland ie 1136 - 1707 types.
the last real scottish issues were in the reign of queen anne, and they had novel names like turner, bawbee, etc etc.
