This coin/medal was discovered 14 years ago. Very little is known about it other than the fact that it is made of gold and has been tested and proven that it is gold. Does anyone know anything about this coin? Origins? What the words are? Value? Pictures are posted below... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v142/simba_2004/2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v142/simba_2004/1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v142/simba_2004/100_5339.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v142/simba_2004/100_5338.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v142/simba_2004/100_5337.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v142/simba_2004/100_5336.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v142/simba_2004/100_5335.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v142/simba_2004/100_5334.jpg
Howdy dereknitrorc - Welcome to the Forum !! Based on the rough design I would guess it comes from eastern Europe. But I don't think it's gold - gold doesn't corrode and that is very corroded. The corrosion has almost eaten away the legends entirely and that's what you need to identify the item. Now, it may have been gold plated at one time and depending on what testing was done that may explain the presence of gold in the testing.
Agreed. One side is mildly reminiscent of the Hungarian `Madonna and Child' design but that's about it. I'm fairly certain that the item has been cast as opposed to struck. It's also the funniest colour of gold i've ever set eyes on .
Hi, Obverse design is typical for eastern Europe - I can say I`m sure it isn`t Hungarian (compare with Hungarian design), but more Polish - please find pictures of holy mother with child from Polish churches. But... on reverse I see saint Dominic (see at the parted inscription: XXXXXX something - MENIC). St. Dominic is not very popular in eastern Europe - I think your coin is a devotional medal from south America.
Welcome aboard. You should post this to the Vatican City in Rome.Perhaps someone may know something about it.I wouldn't be too surprised if the Pope of Rome knew anything about this. Aidan.
sorry about the color distortion, my camera did that for some reason and I'm not sure why. It is the lighting tha makes it that color, in plain daylight it is clearly gold colored and from where it was tested, the whole thing is gold with a little bit of silver and some zinc I think.
You mention that it was discovered 14 years ago. Out of interest can you tell me where and in what circumstances?
are you talking about the discoloration? that was my camera doing that, i have no idea as to why it did that to be honest with you. I am sending it off to have it repaired, when you spend $400 on a camera...well you had better expect it to work. For the words being like that, idk, it is strange but I have seen it before on tv with the coins doing that. idk, I'm beyond puzzled about it and haven't had much luck with finding out anything about it. This forum is the first place to actually be able to tell me who is on it, no one else knew. Who can it be taken to to have it appraised?
