I bought this today and the flip it was in says China and the price ($18)...nothing else.I went to my trusty Krause and looked it up.If I got it right it's a dollar or yuan and was only made in 1914 and 1918.Is this correct and if so ,what year would it be?

Yours is dated Republic Year 3 (1914). The six characters above the bust of Yuan Shih-kai on the obverse, reading right to left, give the date, with the next to last character being "three" and the last character being "year". Those same characters, with different pronunciations, mean the same thing in Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

From the price, I am guessing that it has a reeded edge, which would be Y#329, as the multiple varieties with plain edges or edge designs, are all considerably more valuable than $18 in the condition shown. Bullion value is in the $9 neighborhood.

General Yuan was a Qing Dynasty military official who played a prominent part in the revolt and became an official of the new Republic of China in 1912.

A slightly different version of the coin was issued in years 8-10 (1919-21), not in year 7 (1918).

Put a magnet to the coin. If it sticks, its counterfeit. I purchased a lot of these for next to nothing, and didn't expect a great deal.

Be very careful of the Chinese coins on ebay......

If it is real, you got yourself a great buy....

Thanks for the heads up wolves69.
Looks like the one I bought is real...it's .800+ silver.
Here's a great little trick that will help those of you who don't see a whole lot of difference between my coin and wolves69's fake.Click on my obverse image and then his. Then using the tabs at the bottom of your browser, click quickly back and forth between the two.Now you'll know the difference.

Roy,It is the reeded edge variety. Thanks again for the info.
