I am trying to find out if these coins are real and if so approximate value. They are part of an inheritance for my stepdaughters. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
They look OK to me, though I should warn you that I am not at all an expert, and ancient Chinese coins are often faked. These, however, I don't think are terribly expensive coins. They might be OK on the authenticity front, but they're fairly common. I have some of the Tang Dynasty pieces I got from @Ken Dorney for $10-15-ish. I think most of those are worth in the $5-20 range (though again, I should warn you that that is purely speculation, from someone who only knows a very tiny bit about Chinese coins). Ken Dorney or others may be able to give you more reliable information.
They are all genuine. Worth maybe $30. Sorry for the short reply. I’m at a show and hard to post on a phone.
Thanks so much for your help! Some of the pics got duplicated I think but there are 8 coins total. So 8 coins this old are worth about $30? I would have guessed more.
The vast majority of ancient and medieval Chinese coins are worth from $5 to $10. I know, it sounds low, but they made many millions of them.
Kind of hard to believe, but yes, even though legitimately ancient, they are quite common, as enormous hoards are found. Some in the tons. They're neat, though. I gave a nicely patinated Tang Dynasty coin to a hippie-ish/martial-artsy friend, once, and he made a necklace out of it with a leather thong. Did quite a nice job of it. I was pleased that he appreciated it so much. These can sometimes make nice jewelry items or ornaments like that, since they've got modest numismatic value yet plenty of curiosity value.
