Hi all - I recently found a strange looking penny while looking through a coin collection left to me by a deceased family member. I'm not sure if it's rare or valuable, but it certainly looks interesting, so I'm trying to figure out exactly what it is, or what might have caused the anomalies. I've taken a couple of scans of its front and back, which are attached below, and I'll try my best to describe it. On the first side, which I assume to be the face, all of the markings that would be on the face of a normal penny, except for Lincoln's head, can be seen pretty easily. Lincoln's head is slightly obscured by the anomalous markings on the coin, but it can clearly be seen in the right light. These other markings appear to be the mirror image of those normally found on the back of a penny - they are also rotated about 90 degrees from Lincoln's orientation. There are also a couple of other odd markings - including two bumps, which appear in the picture but are slightly more pronounced than it would let on, and some problem with the positioning of the ridge along the edge of the coin. The second side, which I'm assuming to be the back, is very similar to the first - it has all of the markings that the back of a penny normally would, but it also has the mirror image of the back of a penny printed at an angle to the first one. This side doesn't appear to have any bumps or indentations, but it does have a similar problem with the positioning of its edge. I have no experience with coin collecting and so far all of my research into coinage errors hasn't helped me identify it - so any help from you all would be appreciated. Thanks!
Someone put 3 coins in a vise and squeezed them. This is the coin that was in between. It is a damaged coin, not an error.
Holy cow! Thanks for the quick reply! Too bad that it isn't an actual error, but my uncle wasn't a rich man, so I kinda assumed that it wasn't anything really valuable. Thanks for the conformation, though - I'll definitely come back here if I have any other coin related questions!
