I have been left some coins and note by my late grandmother and they are very old. I need help and am hoping for a wed sight where I can get a value on these items. Some of the notes are very old and have no value to me but may to someone else. One note is a five pound note written on parchment dated 1905 serial number 006. Is there someone in Toronto who I can go to to get a vaule on this and other notes and coins. E-mail anton.voronoff@cibc.ca. Thanks
Your local bookstore (Barnes & Noble, Borders, etc.) will probably have books similar to the Red Book with coin values. If not, it looks like Amazon.com has books on Canadian coins (I’m assuming they’re Canadian coins).
Also, Yahoo lists seven coin dealers in the Toronto area: http://ca.yp.yahoo.com/py/ysp?CID=0...9385335&RS=ON&STYPE=D&R=D&SRC=yahoo&MC=1&PI=1
Another tip is don’t clean the coins; don’t even wipe them. Washing them might make them look shiny to the average guy in the street, but an experienced coin collector will probably offer you much less if they’ve been cleaned. The reason is that almost any cleaning will degrade the metal one way or another (for example, chemicals removing the luster (not the same thing as shine) or a cloth putting tiny scratches onto the coin that are obvious with a magnifying glass). The end result is that coins that are cleaned could be only worth a fraction of what they were when not cleaned. Going a step further, handle them with gloves or by their rims. The oils in fingerprints will also devalue the coins. So don’t clean them until you’ve talked to experts, and maybe not even then.
There's also another Canadian coin dealer that I'm guessing is a big time operation because every single issue of Coin World has a two-page ad from them featuring Canadian coins. However, their address is in Winnipeg. But, they might be able to point you in the right direction if you called them.
