HI Everyone, JUST Serching through Coins today and I Think i Have Found a Big One, 1955D over 1956D Date Im Not sure how to proceed or what to due, Im Not a Member of Any Clubs, Ive checked all over on line and can not find anything to attribute this to. Please Let Me know Frank
A 5 over 6 would make no sense. Maybe I'll take that back, but I dont think so. Are you thinking along the lines of the 1958/7? If so, most experts have debunked this piece as a die-gouge.
An outline of something can be seen, that is indisputeable. What it is, is subject to question. I have no idea, but would like to see what people think.
It's a puzzler, that's for sure. Look a a regular '56. The bottom loop is lower, while the upper tail would extend way furthur than shown. Whatever, I like it.
It's almost certainly a simulacrum. It's a stain that happens to match the shape of a partial numeral. Notice that much of the rest of your coin is stained the same color.
IMHO not an over date but is pretty cool looking as stated above makes no sense to have a 55/56 or 5/6 I truly believe its a stain that appears to look like a 6 under the 5. Keep on the search as they are out there ieven in pocket change.
No, I would leave it as it is, I like Mike's term 'simulacrum'. In collecting you may run into several over the years. Like the outline of Elvis on a IHOP pancake. If it is a chemical stain/tarnish, water wouldn't take it off.
