We found the non fractional version of this coin here: http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces11470.html We can't find any information at all on the half though. Any help would be much appreciated!
found it. Saudi Arabia Krause# KM#36 trade coinage, DENOMINATION- Guinea 7.9881 g. weight, .917 gold content, date AH1370(1950) mintage 2,000,000 values xf-BV, UNC-$425, bu-$450 there is another date AH1377(1957) same looking coin KM#43 mintage- 1,579,000 same values. I am not sure what date your coin is ???
since there is only 1 pic of your coin in the Krause catalog and that pic of your coin looks like it has a different date on it.... so I am guessing your coin is the second coin listed without a picture but under the same Guinea denomination date Ah1377(1957)
Both the coins you mentioned are whole Guineas. This coin has to be a half because the weight is exactly half of what a Guinea is supposed to weigh. We haven't had any trouble finding the Guinea, but we can't find any mention of a half guinea anywhere.
1/2 Riyal? Legends look similar (can't tell if exact) but would be silver & the weight would be 5.8 grams http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces21032.html
could jjOO be right a gold plated silver coin ? sounds possible. it's all about the weight of the coin and diameter. what is the weight and diameter of your coin ?
We thought it might be a gold plated silver riyal as well, but after running tests, we have determined that it is gold in the same proportion as the whole Guinea. The coin weighs 3.938 grams with a diameter of 19mm.
it looks like the pic for a 1/2 riyal KM#17. but you said the gram weight is smaller. your coin could be a pattern coin but all the paterns I see for half guinea are silver. a mystery for sure. could it be a gold plated pattern coin ??? not knowing is driving me crazy... in a good way but still baffiled.
just an observation your coin dates look like the same date in the half riyal KM#17 AH1354(1935) and the pattern coins dates look like AH1373-1370 so i am guessing it is not a patern. hmmm
you might have a very rare coin here. the silver half riyal is 25mm so cross that off the possiblities. ugh. I have also looked in my 17th,18th and 19TH century krause catlogs and found nothing there either ugh.
The coin is dated 1354 AH. ( 1935 AD ). Denomination is Half Guinea. It is of Trade Coinage. If it is genuine, it could be a very rare pattern. I guess so .. Charles
The first picture, (the obverse?) has been polished as if it has been worn as jewelry, but the coin clearly looks struck and not cast. There are no casting marks around the edge, and all the devices look sharp and struck. Do you guys think that NGC or PCGS would know what this is? Is it worth it to send it off for grading?
