I recently purchased a decent 1884-CC GSA Morgan Silver Dollar that has an overdate 18 over 18 and need help identifying the VAM Number! You can see from the closeup picture of the Date, that there is the outline of another "1" orientated WestNorthwest of the Primary "1" and there are loops from another "8" peeking out WestNorthwest of the Primary "8".

    Thanks...Frank

The pic's kinda small to exactly attribute it, so here's a couple of questions:

    1) Does the mintmark show any doubling to the west? It'll be easy to see under a loupe. There could be either inside doubling, or both inside and outside.

    2) Do the inside loops of the first 8 have anything resembling die chips in them? They'd be to the right of the loop.

Preliminary guess is you'll find doubling inside the first C of the mintmark, and it's a VAM2.

    SuperDave,

Yes, there is one small Die Chip on the right side of the inside loop of the top loop! There is also what appears to be Machine Doubling evident on the inside (right) of the first "C" in the Mint Mark. Does this indicate that it is a VAM 2 and if so, what kind of price are these 1884-CC Morgans in MS-63 to MS-64?

    Thanks...Frank

Here's the VAM2 description straight from the Encyclopedia:

What detail I can see from your pic seems to match the photo associated with this VAM in the Encyclopedia. There are no updates on Ashmore which shed more light on the matter. It's unlikely this one would have value over and above the grade.

    Barry,

Thanks for offering advice on the coin but this Thread is two years old and the coin is long gone! Don't feel bad about posting to a very old Thread! We all have done at least once and some of us (like myself) have done it many times.
