These are five Morgan VAMs that I recently picked up. I have a VAM price list and some are on it, but I don't know much about grading. I was looking for opinions. I know it's tough to grade with a picture, but any help is appreciated. The variety values vary greatly... like the 1882-O O/S VAM-3. It's $32 in AU50, $120 in MS60, and $925 in MS63. #1 1878-S VAM-15 - die gouges/lines in wings and tail; this is one I mentioned in another thread; has black ink or smoke on both sides. I was thinking AU+ without the stain. #2 1888-P VAM-7A - die scratches on reverse. XF-AU? #3 1882-O O/S VAM-3 - O mint over S. VF-XF? #4 1879-S - 78 reverse, overpolished die bottom of neck, double D in dollar. AU? #5 1886-P VAM-1B - die break in designer's initial M. AU+? Thanks, Norm
78-S Looks like a mid MS 62 or 63 grade, but the blotchyness in the pic could be a bad cleaning. 88-P Looks like a high AU 55 - 58 82 O/S Look like a nice AU 53 79-S Again looks like a low AU 50 maybe 53. Looks cleaned and wiped though. 86-P This one is a bit hard to tell in the pic. Going by the flatness in the eagles wings, I would say a nice AU. Could be a MS-60 if weakly struck. Too hard to tell in the pic.
My guesses - 78-S - MS62 - bad cleaning maybe but looks more like bag toning that could have turned out better 88- AU50 82-O - AU50 2nd 78-S ( sure looks like an 8 to me ) AU53 wiped 86 - AU55 cleaned
