Im trying to find a guide online with pictures comparing normal r and peg leg r on the 1974 d ike not having any luck
k well its not a peg leg but im seeing some odd stuff the r in liberty on the 74 d is different then the r on the 74 the curbed leg is different. also there are extra lines around letters most seen on the god motto but it was hard to capture on picture its not a refrection. ive seem reflection alot on other coins. also im asuming this mark is abrasion on the eagles face . hard to see in hand inless under 10x and in light
I would reach out to SteveP on the Ikegroup with your questions. He has a lot of info on Peg Legs and would be the best person I can think of to help you with this.
I have no idea what you are asking so will only address the "abrasion" on the Eagles Head. This abrasion is caused from the mint packaging process used to package up the US Mint Sets. It's common and what I use to determine if a coin roll is an original bank roll or a put together roll. It is grade debilitating but on occasion can slip through. I've seen 1974 IKEs graded MS66 that had this abrasion. Typically, for the Eisenhower Dollar in Mint Sets, the abrasion is on the Eagles Head and the leading edges of the wings. Occasionally, it appears in IKEs hair on the obverse. For Kennedy Half Dollars, the abrasion appears again on the Eagles Head and again, it is grade limiting.
1974 d has a rare peg leg http://www.ikegroup.info/?page_id=214 "The authors enjoy pointing out the interesting 1974-D “Major Peg Leg” which sports a radically fading and shortened peg leg"
I learned something new today. Thanks enochian. A curiosity on that article... there's a typo in the definitions for DIVA. It says bus strike and proofs are B & S, respectively... where I'm fairly certain they meant B&P. Reminds me of my high school calculus instructor: "You learn something new EVERY day if you don't watch out."
