Yep just looked in my red book and the 79 Wide rim books for $12 in ms65 and the narrow is $2 in MS65
for the 1979-P in MS63 a narrow rim (far date) goes for like $3.00, and a wide rim (near date) for $20.00 or so.. so i'd say wide rim
The wide rim or near date SBA's are semi-rare. I managed to find one out of about a hundred rolls I searched a few years ago. My fellow collectors have been giving $15.00-$20.00 for low MS examples. I like mine. Even though it is not a MS coin it only cost me a dollar.
Thanks for the fast replies! Here is the story: My dad is a vet, and he has been trying to get someone to pay their bill. $129 to be exact. Well, they finally show up today, and you can guess what happens. They pay entirely with SBA and sacs. Happy day for me. What made me cringe though was they were in a plastic bag, and jingling all around, kinda makes me cringe, lol. Well, happy day for me! I should get my parents to play the lottery and I choose the numers, if my luck keeps going like yesterday and today. Well, right now I sorted them all, and found a very good amount of what I think are wide rims. Will post pics. Surprisingly, if I am right, I found more wide than narrow. But will need all yalls help. Thanks! Also, found a nice looking 80 S, with a good toning. I grade it about a 62/63 easy. Thanks for the help so far! Phoenix
Idea Here's some food for thought. If it turns out that you do have a group of near dates and you want to sell them, you might try doing something like this to get a better return on your sales. The other mint/dates of the circulated SBA's are not hard to come by and are not expensive to buy if in circulated condition. So if you can put together a set, complete or just 79 year sets, "including" the "near date", your likely to get a more profitable return. Maybe...I guess. Buy the way, congratulations on your find.

Okay, thanks! I compared, and it doesn't look like any of them are "the" wide rim variety, but still have a thick rim. I think what doesn't make them really qualify is the date isn't as close to the rim. But it was still neat finding them. The ones I have I guess just have fat rims. Found a few keepers though. Surprisingly, I found 2 1999s, and those weren't issued for circ., right? Not sure. But thanks everybody! Also, found what I would say is an UNC 80 S, but not so sure, can't see any where, but the S is very clear and noticeable. Also, found an UNC 80 P and 79 P, with a nice toning. Good work on this one Jody. I have collected a few sets of SBA's, as you can see from the pics. I have also searched many rolls and have now traded my eye to spot a near date at a glance. I initially collected hundreds of dollars of SBA's when I first caught the coin collecting bug/passion several years ago. SBA's were easy to find and I figured they would eventually be taken out of circulation, at least in my life time. As I matured as a collector I decided to collect mostly all UNC coins. I used the hundreds of dollars of the circulated SBA's to complete my ASE set. It was a sweet trade. I'll always have a love for the SBA because of this. The SBA is not a very attractive coin. Just my opinion. I also have two sets of proofs 70-81. The 99 is a little two expensive for a clad coin IMHO, so I'm waiting to get the deal of the day on this one. The circulated Sac's would be a lot more fun to collect if the mint would circulate more the just a couple of years. Oh well I'll just have to play with new Presidential dollar. Collecting at face value is just fine!!!!
Very nice... the one set i'm missing is the 1981 souvenir set. For some reason I just can't bring myself to pony up the $75 or so it goes for.
correct me if im wrong but i dont beleive they made a 99s SBA. There was a D and a P and the proof coin in a seperate box with a P mint mark.
