I'm trying to expand my numismatic reference library (I'm into Capped Bust and Seated Liberty coinage) and I want to know which of these two books would you recommend? (I can only afford one at the moment.): http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/early-quarter-dollars-of-the-united-states-mint-1796-1838.html or http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/early-united-states-quarters-1796-1838.html I want to get all of the more expensive books for my library first I think. Also any other book recommendations you may have for a capped bust and seated liberty collector. Thanks, GobrechtReich85
I would make sure you own the standard references, the book all coins are numbered by. Wiley Buggert will be pricey for SL halves, but owning the standards is where I always start. Btw, I would seek out numismatic booksellers, not retailers. Numismatic booksellers are where you will find out of print titles, which most good books are. PM me if you need some recommendations.
Actually, let me rephrase that. Are there any online numismatic booksellers that you would recommend?
Kolbe and Fanning are probably the largest. They have pretty large auctions like three times a year. Lake books is a smaller one, and there are a couple of others. Numislit on ebay is a good guy, and has a vcoins store as well.
Best book for the Bust half dimes in Federal half dimes 1794 - 1837 Long out of print, if you can find a copy expect it to be $125 - $150. Best book for Bust dimes is United States Bust dimes 1796 - 1837. Even longer out of print and costly. Can run anywhere from $250 to $400. Best book for Seated half dimes in United States Seated half dime by Al Blythe. Not the best book, but better than Valentine. Best book for Seated dimes in actually an online book The Definitive Resource For Liberty Seated Dime Variety Collectors best thing about this one is that it is free http://www.seateddimevarieties.com/ Best book for seated quarters is Liberty seated quarters by Larry Briggs. Out of print but not too costly, I think you can probably find it for about $50
Sorry I haven't posted anything in a while. My laptop was having problems. Anyway, Basically what I'm looking to do is build a good size numismatic reference library. However, at the prices I'm seeing these books listed at I might have to stop buying coins for at least a couple of years to fund this project. Another idea I thought of is, sometimes local libraries have used book sales. So I might check some of the libraries in my area and see if I can find anything. What do you think?
Rich Uhrich usually has some of the better books.... http://www.richuhrichcoins.com/category.php?cat=18
Good books, books not updated but published once and then go out of print, usually appreciate not depreciate. Good books are desired, and do bring good prices. The best prices I usually find for these are from numismatic book auctions, which is why I suggested them. Auctions and patience will yield results.
