I just got these photos today from a friend in Israel who needs help in determining the rarity and value of this tetradrachm of Caracalla. The coin weighs 13 grams and it is from Aelia Capitolina (Jerusalem). The reverse of this coin has an urn to the right of the eagle and script (Hebrew?) in the exergue. This must be a very rare variety, but I lack the background to properly make an attribution. Are there any catalog or auction references for this variety? Does it appear in Prieur? Thank you
robinjojo, The coin you picture is very difficult to attribute because the reverse inscription is muddled near the 4:00 o'clock area . There are many different varieties of this coin type that vary slightly from one to another. Judaean coins are hard to predict at auction. I sold the coin pictured below at a Heritage auction for $480.00. It was an extremely rare type from from Caesarea Maritima, with only 1 example cited by Prieur. Judaea, Caesarea Maritima, Caracalla (struck AD 215-217), Billion Tet.: 26 mm, 13.81 gm, 6 h. Prieur 1659a.
Thank you, Al. When it comes to Caracalla, I am basically lost beyond the issues from Antioch and Tyre. This area of Roman coinage (silver provincial) is a virtual empire in itself with so many mints and varieties not only for Caracalla, but for the other emperors over the centuries.
