It looks like CC has been overstamped above an S. I have checked variety vista but they only show 2 re-punches for the 1883 CC. 1883-CC $1 RPM-001 and 1883-CC $1 RPM-002. I don't know if Carson City ever overstamped San Francisco mintmarks as i can find no references to it.
Check these out: http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/1883-CC_VAMs There was a CC/CC. Vam5s Edit: lots of similar marks to the VAM5a
It is my understanding that the mintmarks were punched into the dies in Philadelphia. Since the Carson City Mint had more dies on hand than they needed (refer to O/CC) it seems unlikely that the San Francisco Mint would send any dies to Carson City. What say you John @messydesk ? ~ Chris
No such thing as a CC/S Morgan. You're seeing polishing lines inside the mint mark, which happens frequently. As mentioned earlier, check the listing of known varieties on VAMWorld. VAMs 2 and 3 have the same reverse with these lines in the mint marks. The first C is also doubled on those. I can't make a positive attribution from your photos, however, as the mint mark position doesn't really vary among the 83-CC reverse dies.
Thanks very much guys. I had no internet for a while buy have checked vamworld and am completely satisfied that my coin is 1883-CC VAM-3. I can see 7 of the 8 identifying features but would need more magnification to see if the designers initial is slightly doubled. Again, many thanks for your kind attention
