I have found a coin on eBay that I REALLY like. I've wanted to purchase a gold coin for a while and this coin variety has always captivated me. On this particular coin the price is right, the coin looks amazing, and it's practically a steal. I want to buy it but I do need advice, I would like someone to p/m me so I can send them the coin link. Someone who wouldn't just turn around and buy it for themselves. Please try and be courteous. It is a gold coin so someone with experience in that field would be appreciated.
Make sure to look at the sellers reputation and location. Make sure the pictures are good and not hiding anything.
The reputation is fine. All positive other than one for shipping complications over a year ago. The pictures are not high res and I have emailed him/her for more pictures.
I would say you have doubts about bidding/buying this coin since you came here asking for other's opinions and advice. Maybe it would be best to pass on this one and look for one from a local dealer you know and trust.
The last time I purchased a coin on ebay I was told it was cleaned upon posting it here. So shame on me when I mess up and shame on me when I ask for help so i don't mess up? What's the point of the coin community then? Everyone is so quick to jump on 'cleaned' here yet so reluctant to help.
Typically the advice is more or less, 'you're new, leave it to us experts.' I don't have doubts about buying the coin, I already said I like the coin and price. I was simply asking for someone experienced with gold coins to give me their own 2 cents in case I might have overlooked something. Not to mention that I asked if someone is interested to p/m me. If you aren't interested in helping why waste my time and your time replying?
What's the return policy? If returnable, buy it, and have your local B&M dealer give you an opinion. Pay for the opinion if necessary.
That couldn't be further from the truth if it was all the way in Iraq. All I did was make a suggestion. That is my opinion. Don't like it, hey whatever. I'm not the one with doubts about buying a gold coin off eBay, you are. Or you wouldn't be asking for advice and opinions on an open forum. Just MY 2 pennies worth!
What's the auction type, standard auction style or buy it now? More than likely, if it's an auction style, there's going to be some last minute stiff competition. Budget yourself to a set amount you would be willing to purchase without being held over the coals for a ridiculous price. Don't be afraid to set a limit, there will always be another one similar to it.
The only way we can help is by posting a link. That way you get multiple answers and most likely CTer's know what they are doing. I have won many an auction that I posted on CT before I made my decision. Just my 2 cents.
You're absolutely right, all knowing, free of flaw and skepticism. Next time I want a second opinion, I'll shove it up my ***. I'd hate to come off as someone who has doubts.
Wrath, take a step back and try not to take the advice personally, it's just an opionion. In the first post you said 'the coin looks amazing, and it's practically a steal.', combine this with your own admission about a lack of knowledge and I think the advice to slow down is quite reasonable. All BU was saying was slow down, get some experience or talk with a dealer who has some. Because unless you are deep into the weeds of variety collecting, amazing date/mint type coins do not come at steal prices, you only get one. I don't collect gold, but feel free to pm me the link and I will take a look at it for you. As i don't collect it I have no interest in buying it.
if you like it just get it. as long as you don't get bid fever and way overpay. it's still gold after all. not too many people are sorry they bought gold and if it's something you like.......
I did slow down. I came here and asked for advice. I asked for some who 'wanted' to give me advice to private message me. I'm not trying to be defensive but that was all there was to my post. I'm not going to let me being a novice collector stop me from buying stuff. I did purchase the coin, seller sent me higher res pictures and I compared it to PCGS pictures and made an offer which was accepted. I really only bought it because I've always liked Indian Heads and just wanted to have one in my possession.
If you like the coin I am glad you purchased it. At the end of the day only you can set it's value. Since the auction has ended can you post the link?
I'm just rotten at grading those coins. The incuse design throws me every time. But the coin pictured is circulated somewhat. Still looks nice though.
