I have a Canon S3 IS SLR six megapixel that I want to add a Raynox dcr-250 macro lens to. A Canon LAH-DC20 lens adapter will take care of the this job. I do not want to spend hundreds on this setup. The advice I need to purchase a copy stand is : What will the average distance be between the lens and the coin be. I'll be using Macro and/or Supermacro settings to get the best details that are possible. Any advice will be thankfully received. Also please suggest any improvement I can make that won't cost over $100. THANKS. zeke
Raynox's website recommends not using the macro or supermacro settings with this close-up lens. They show an example of using their product with an S2 at the maximum telephoto setting at a distance of 107mm, or about 4.2 inches. Given that the S3 places restricts you to shorter focal lengths in that mode, that makes sense. http://www.raynox.co.jp/comparison/digital/comp_pss2is.htm#dcr-150
I don't want to take your wind out of your sails, but I bought and tried that DCR250 and never ended up using it. I think I'll sell it for less than you can find it. it clips on to the end of my canon lens. cant answer your question without being familiar with the lens. I remember that I had trouble with vignetting and getting the coin in the frame. If your lens detaches from you camera body. Get extension tube rings for 10 bucks and add them to the lens. $10 on eBay I was able to take a 35-70mm lens from an old Nikon 35mm film camera and adapt it to my Canon with the aforementioned extension rings and shoot images like this. This is a picture of that lens with those extension rings and a ghetto copy stand built from broke tripod parts.
Thanks benveniste, I read that section of the Raynox website but missed the word NOT. So all I have to do is zoom out to the maximum and focus on to the coin from there. Seems to me that sounds a little too simple and easy after what I have gone through using macro and super macro modes without getting clear sharp pictures because of being too close to the coin with poor lighting. The copy stand will make a world of difference too. Thanks a ton. zeke
EEWheaties, that is a great setup you have there. I'm go to get a 12 inch copy stand to place on my desk, I think. But with lighting and power supply and video leads and my laptop I beleive that I'll need a little larger space. This is going to be tough because I live in a 2 bdrm apt. in which the 2nd bdrm is a small den which I have hardly any room to spare. But where there's a will.... Say if you want to sell that raynox DCR250 please pm me soon. Thanks zeke.
HI zeke, I just picked this copy stand up for $30. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/385012-REG/Digital_Pursuits_DPCS129_Close_Up_Copy_Stand.html It's working out pretty well so far. They also have many others you might want to check their site out.
