I've just begun to collect coins as a spinoff from my metal detecting hobby. Metal detecting is providing me with a nice cross-section of coins from every decade and I enjoy the "hunt". In addition to this I would like to expand my coin collecting hobby to include perhaps gold coins or ancient coins as something I could persue off-season (winter months) that could also be used as an investment vehicle. I love the look of American gold coins but I also really enjoy Greek and Roman coins. I don't have an unlimited budget but I thought of converting my yearly clad finds into this area. For investing, which direction would you go?

Invest in your happiness and get coins you like. Profitable investing with coins is not easy.

Most people will tell you to collect for the fun of it and not as an investment and if you make any money all the better, but 1st decide what you want to collect , 2nd buy a couple of books on the areas you think you'd like and learn about them . The old saying buy the book before the coin , it's a very good saying because most of us end up paying for our mistakes of not knowing how to grade or tell if a coin was cleaned or altered . Good collecting .
