Need to sell some American Eagle platinum coins ASAP, left to me by my mother. Does is make a difference if the coins are rated (MS69) or are they basically all worth spot less some amount? Selling about 6 ozs and I hate not knowing what I am doing. Thanks for any advice.
It will likely make no difference what the slab says. These coins are sold every day as bullion and if you can sell it as a coin, you will do better. Unfortunately, I know of no one who buys these as coins.
I think if they are slabbed and MS69, you shouldn't settle for less than spot. You should get spot for that. A dealer shouldn't have any trouble selling an authenticated coin in MS69 condition with a mark up for his profit.
99% of the dealers out there will look at them and say that the slab - regardless of the grade on it - is meaningless. Then they will offer about 10% less than spot.
PM's PM's tend to ALWAYS be worth something. Ergo, "PM". THUS~That's How they are Precious and only sink so low because of their Weight/application content. What they are worth depends on how soon you must "ASAP" it away. They all look the same after they go into the melting pot or get turned into a muffler, wedding ring, Smart Bomb or thing~o~ma~Jing yet to be invented. What you get for them depends on when you get rid of it and how much they want it, not how pretty it is before it gets used as something else...... Unless you take the time to find someone that cares.
Well, $1575 is about 98.5% of spot. I bet if you looked around a little harder, you could actually find someone who will give you $1600 for it. Current spot is $1615 but was been less then $1600 at one time a few trading days ago. Good luck on your sell.
You will get less than spot no matter what. MS-69 means nothing, they are all MS-69 no one cares. Plus dealers do have trouble selling this junk unless the bullion man is comming by that day because collectors don't have deep enough pockets for this stuff day to day. Platinum is the worst PM there is for resale or profit all across the board.
If $1575 is 98.5% of spot the dealers here today would be a buyer at $1400 or $1375 and would not want it regardless. These are real world cases - this stuff is a bother as an investible or numismatically either way it a real pain.
it's a lot of $ to tie up waiting for someone who wants a slabbed MS-69 coin. As a PM it's not much better, they still need a buyer, but bullion buyers are much easier to find because you can sell them dealer to dealer. Unfortunately when selling dealer to dealer, you have to let the buyer have some room for profit. I guess what I am trying to say is that if you can find someone who will pay spot for it, don't walk, run and sell them!
