My wife still owes me a Christmas present (my first choice item fell through), so I'm gonna get her to buy me a nice coin for my type collection. I have most, if not all of the 20th century coins. What would you guys suggest for a nice coin in the 200-300 dollar range that may become more elusive and would be a great "now" purchase for my type set. It may be a LONG while before this thing gets finished, and I'd love to make a great timely purchase now. Below are the coins I already have. Keep in mind that I'm trying to buy all XF or better grade coins. No use in having a type set if I can't see all or most of the details. 1851 Half Cent 1845 Large Cent 1857 Flying Eagle Cent 1863 Indian Head Cent 1906 Indian Head Cent 1909 Lincoln VDB Cent 1045 Lincoln Cent 1943 Lincoln Cent 2005 Lincoln Cent 1864 2 cent 1853 3 cent 1881 3 cent 1882 Shield Nickel 1883 Liberty Head No Cents 1911 Liberty Head 1913 Buffalo Nickel Type 1 1937 Buffalo Nickel Type 2 1964 Jefferson 1943 Jefferson War Nickel 1910 Liberty Head Dime 1943 Mercury Dime 1963 Roosevelt Dime 1990 Roosevelt Dime 1929 Standing Liberty Quarter Type 2 1964 Washington Quarter 1984 Washington Quarter 1943 Walking Liberty Half 1963 Franklin Half 1964 Kennedy Half 1984 Kennedy Half 1921 Morgan Dollar 1922 Reace Dollar 1972 Eisenhower Dollar 1976 Bicentennial Quarter 1976 Bicentennial Half 1976 Bicentennial Dollar Susan B. Anthony Dollar Sacagawea Dollar 2001 State Quarter 2006 Silver Eagle Plus...I have all of the Commemorative slots in my Dansco 7070 album filled. I know this is a lot of information to read over, but I'd really appreciate any suggestions. This is a Christmas gift from my wife, so I'd love to make a GREAT purchase that will make this set stand out...and I know you guys and gals have the best advice around. Thanks in advance for the help!!!
I've thought about a nice Trade Dollar, too. I must be honest though...I'm scared to buy one. Almost every person I've heard of that's bought a counterfeit coin has bought a fake Trade Dollar. Because of my rural location, most of my purchases are made over the internet (Ebay for the most part). I would never buy one from an overseas merchant, but besides that, I don't know the best way to buy one. I hate buying a slabbed coin only to break it out to place in my set. I guess I can just look for good feedback and bite the bullet.
Ugaman. I have a type set and for me a 20 cent piece in ex fine would be a good coin to get now, there are a few years that get up into the money however if you shop around you can find some nice examples. The 20 cent piece will only go up in value so if you can get one now it would be a good addition to your type set and it will only increase in value so it's a win win situation Bruce.
How about a nice Seated Liberty dollar? I have been drooling over those for a while now. I would like to make one of those the next addition to my Dansco types album. I think the only way to buy (to be sure it is authentic) is slabbed or from a reputable dealer.... of which there is a great list GD has created. - Jake
Did you put early commemorative's in that spot? You really should put two early's and 2 modern. You are going to have to give in a little on that XF unless your loaded.
Actually, I have 3 early commems and 1 later one. I'm not what you would call LOADED, but I am in the banking field and financially comfortable. I usually only work on one major project at a time (a type set being the project for now) and it will be left to my kids, so I want nice coins. So, hopefully I'll be able to stick with the XF grade or higher. I have the cash to pretty much buy the entire thing now if I wanted, but the wife made me promise to limit it to one coin a month. So, I'm dragging it out a little. It also makes me more careful in my purchases. Thanks for all of the suggestions so far!! My wife will be thankful (me too!!).
I am not into type coins, so do not put much weight in my comments. However, the obvious "holes" I see are the Barber quarter and half. An AU Barber half (unc if you are real lucky) or an unc quarter seem to fit all you requirements
