This coin probably isn't worth much more than the quarter I paid for it but I can't find one like it in the back of my Coin Prices magazines or even on Ebay. Everything I can find has "centavos" fully spelled out and with the liberty cap and rays. Your help is appreciated. I'm sure someone here knows something about this coin. Thanks, Dave in WV.
Surprise! Even in that condition it's probably worth a couple of bucks. The mintmark seems to be worn off, but maybe it can be seen under magnification with the coin in hand. Lowest grade valued is Fine: $15 for KM#386 (M); $20 for KM#386.1 (G); and $70 for KM#386.2 (P). It's from the Emperor Maxmilian period (1864-67), and 2.7073g, .903 silver (.0786 ASW). Total mintage is only 45,000! Not very surprising considering the super low mintage. Nice find Dave.
I am surprised. It was in the 25 cent box at the Morgantown coin show. There were some other damaged silver coins that I also bought, but this one looked the best. Thanks.
Pcrdnadave, the coin is inscribed 'IMPERIO MEXICANO',which is the Spanish for 'Mexican Empire'.The mintmark is the Mo. mintmark of the Mexico City mint. The coins of Emperor Maximilian are very difficult to find in any grade.I knew of one dealer who had the 50 Centavos of this reign, but I couldn't afford it.
