Nazi Germany Greater Holy German Empire under Adolf Hitler. 1938. Karl Goetz Silver Medallion. Featuring a seated Germania on a throne flanked by 2 eagles and swastika shields. Reverse: Various shields of the German states "Ein Reich, Ein Volk, Ein Fuhrer. Adolf Hitler. Karl Goetz was one of Germany's most famous medalists. Known primarily for his satirical and nationalistic pieces, his medals depict a very high level of aesthetic art and are among some of the highest sought after art pieces of the period. Amongst his prized works are medals depicting the sinking of the Lusitania and "The Black Shame ".
I've read that Karl Goetz didn't care for the Nazi's and stopped accepting commissions from them shortly before WWII.
I think the artistry and overall design are quite nice. I'm sure you paid a bit for it. Not only would you have to contend against other numismatists, the fact that it actually says Adolf Hitler I'm sure adds quite a premium.
It's quite subjective.. But I like this medal for its design, Goetz and also because it is one of few without Hitler's portrait
Fantastic medal Loong Siew! I am envious. I have this Karl Goetz piece which does not include any Nazi theme. IMHO this pattern has one of the coolest eagles on the reverse. At first, I thought that the eagle was one of those Griffin creatures with the head of an eagle & the body of a lion with wings. I recognized it now as a stylized eagle by Karl Goetz.
I avoid these objects. They contain too much recent sorrow, for me to consider them a collectible. Your ghetto coin makes me sad. My Nero coin does not. Go figure. As the saying goes, 'One mans meat is another mans poison.'
Thanks. Goetz is not particularly known for his Nazi pieces although hie did struck a few such as 1 with Hitler's portrait. He is more famous for his satirical and stylized medals particularly post WWI nationalistic themes.
Well, in Goetz's case "satirical" is a very nice term. He also made such pattern coins (none of his designs was ever picked for a coin), but most of his medals are political propaganda. The piece in the first post was apparently about the "Anschluss" of Austria ... Christian
