Although I do not collect medals, I do collect German coins and of course, toned coins. There was no way I could pass up this stunner. This is what natural toning is all about to me. I have never seen an example where the toning appears to be painted in the perfect positions with perfect colors. Blue sky, scorched earth, orange/red fiery cloud surrounding the fighting troops, all while highlighting the leader in angelic yellows and gold. I'll let the images speak for themselves. Maybe you will see what I mean. Baden-Rastaff, Stadt Silbermedaille (Silver Medal) 1955 Auf den Frieden zu Rastatt 51 mm 44.05 g Schone Patina, fast Stempelgianz (Proof) direct light- highly reflective surfaces. Size Comparison
wow => that is an absolutely gorgeous coin ... very cool!! Huh, but I'm never really sure if irridescent toning is natural, or whether it's caused by some cleaning process during the coin's long and sorted past? (not that I'm saying that this coin is cleaned ... but I am never 100% sure, ya know?) Sadly, I cleaned a bunch of my pennies when I was a YN (40 years ago) => and now they look like "magic" => irridescent and super-cool (I'm just sayin' ... I hate being "that guy", but it does occur every now and then .. and then) :taped-shut:
You have out done your self this time Gbroke outstanding toned medal specimen....one of the best I ever seened! Hey I'll give ya a nickel for it...... Great pick up!!!
The wonky capitalization in the mottoes on the reverse had me puzzled for a while, but I think I've got it: The large letters are Roman numerals, and in each motto they add up to 1714. I'm guessing that's the date of the event depicted?
Thanks for the observation! You may be onto something. The only thing I know about it, is what I posted. I haven't had any luck finding another example or any information.
Greg, I thought you were giving them my address for that one? When she has had a couple weeks to rest at your place, send her on over to my stables.
Beautiful medal just wish we had a separate area to post medals here. I think more very nice medals would come out of the woodwork if you did.
