Hi- I'm new to coin collecting and have been sticking to PCGS and NGC but I've seen a few nice coins on ebay (yes ebay) grading by a "Numismatic Grading Service" and "National Numismatic Grading Co." - I believe a self-slabber. Has anyone come across these slabs? thoughts? Thanks
Welcome to the forum!! I would stay away from those other grading services, I haven't heard good things about NGS or NNGC.
Welcome, milomcg ! I hope you enjoy the board. Here's a way to spot the self-slabbers every time - google 'em. Real TPGs have a first-rate website. Self slabbers have nothing. When you google National Numismatic Grading you get nothing. Obviously, this is a phony non-TPG. For any real TPG, it's all about submissions. How can they make money without accepting submissions ? And how can someone find out how (and where) to submit coins if the TPG has no website ? Self-slabbed coins are worse than raw. Much worse. At least with raw coins, there is a chance the offer is legit. In contrast, A self-slabber is intentionally creating an illusion. The obvious reason : they can stick an inflated grade on there to get an inflated price. Self-slabbing is fraud. Most raw coins are overgraded. Almost all self-slabbed coins are.
WELCOME TO THE FORUM. I almost agree there is one notable exception to the 'web site' is ICCS. Mainly a Canadian grader
Welcome to the forum. I will assume that you are talking about NNC and NGS. If you find a nice coin in one of their slabs, go ahead and buy it, but DO NOT pay any attention to what the slab say. Buy the coin, not the slab.
Hi welcome ! I agree with the previous suggestions. Also, consider the fact there is no market demand for coins slabbed by those companies. Stick to NGC or PCGS is in your best interest.
NNC=Raw coin. The slab will actually hurt the value of the coin. One good thing though, the slabs are very easy to crack open.
That's right. The slab LOWERS the value of the coin. An interesting concept worthy of its own thread.
Im new to all of this but wouldn't the slab be at least good for protection of the coin? Or does it have something to do with the quality of the slabs? Tim
I suppose an argument could be made that the plastic will help protect the coin, but we don't know that these low tier TPG's use a holder that is truely inert. The best argument is for the top grading companies as already mentioned, and their slabs provide a level of protection, as well as having credibility within the collector community.
Then somebody start a thread for one. If a real experienced collector came along, and saw a coin graded MS67 in a XYZ slab, and they knew it was a MS64, and they could get it at a MS64 price, that is fine, and it doesn't lower the coin's value in any way, if you buy the coin and not the slab... And to original poster...Welcome to the forum, and when you see those grading companies run, run very very far away...
