Just wondering if there is any website where one could research National Bank charters by state. Without knowing specific dates banks were in operation it seems almost impossible to find info on banks and banknotes they issued. Any help would be much appreciated. Guy
Don Kelly has a great book out, its about 3-5 pounds and has lots of information on banks, charters, when they changed charter number etc.Go to donckelly.com.
Greg Davis just added this to his website. http://www.antiquebanknotes.com/NationalCurrency/National-Bank-Information.aspx
Coleguy: Somewhere in my files I think I have the CD which Prof Kelly put together. I will look around for it. Will be happy to send it to you so you can research some info. (providing I locate it)
I have my CD at my desk, for good reason - I use it frequently. If you have specific requests please PM me. It helps me find and buy up all the known(and unknown, unreported) notes out there for a certain place.
For detailed info, Don Kelly is the way to go. If you just want a quick list of the banks for each state, you can go to this site: http://www.papermoneyfacts.com/national_currency/national_currency_home_page.htm This one is useful as well: http://nationalcurrencyvalue.com/NationalCurrencyByState.aspx
The Kelly census is about as close to perfect as you can get. But be aware, there are other notes that go unreported for a reason - to give the semblance of rarity. I made the "mistake" of reporting some original charters back in 2007, they are now in the census so they are now no longer discovery notes. Oh well live and learn.
