Hello all, Need some advice on this 1978 Lincoln Cent that my wife found. On the "T" in "States", we see a "D" which looks exactly like that in "United". What does CT think and what caused it? Thanks. Chas. EDIT: Also, how would I go about cleaning this coin if it is a good error?
LoL, I know it needs to be cleaned, but first I want to make sure its worth cleaning, and what is best to use to clean it. On my desk, the white stuff looks like whiteout, just not sure. One of the first things I learned on CT is to NEVER clean a coin. Can anyone tell me what its called where the letter is in the wrong place?
Acetone won't harm a copper-alloy cent. This could be an in-collar double strike with rotation between strikes.
I think the coin is very cool. If it were mine I would soak it in acetone for a week or 2,but dont rub or scrub it. soak and pat dry.if it helps repeat. i have done this to several coins it dose not damage the coin or decrease the value. cool find protect it
Value would depend on the condition of the coin (after removal of the surface crud) and how much of the first strike is visible beneath the second strike. Since you only see one letter, it's likely most of the first strike has been obliterated. It may be worth $35 - $50.
Can't wait to see this coin cleaned up, I believe I see more than just a "D" going on here. Are ya done yet?
Thanks for the info Mike, Abe, gonna hit the store a little later on, but its gonna need a week to sit in the acetone. I'll post the results when its finish.
My old eyes see a small " D " inside the large " A " . The coin looks like a battery rider that some of the back yard mechanics used to put on the battery posts to draw the corrosion to the one cent piece and keep it off the terminals . I`m not so sure it worked but i`ve seen it many times .
I lean in Mike's direction so far. There appears to be something resembling a proper D there. Howsabout an image of the entire reverse and then the entire obverse so we can see if there is any other evidence of a multiple strike. Thanks, Bill
