I was wondering, w/ the overwhelming prices some of these coins fetching, (ie...2005 Nicks), what coin(s) do you believe will take the plummet? And how soon? TIA :)

I predict the exact opposite, as I believe with the new Bison Nickel, new collectors will be attracted and many may seek out the Buffalo commem, keeping its price strong and also showing a increase...

The 2004 Westward Journey Coin & Medal set.

When collectors finally get the 2005 version and see how BAD it actually is, they will quickly forget about trying to land the 2004 set! :)

Well if nothing else you reminded me of something I forgot - I should have included British coinage as well ;)

There was me thinking US and UK mint stuff was overpriced!

I bet even the Vatican can outdo Canada though!

Well it wasn't current mint products I had in mind - I would expect those will stay pretty much where they are.

GD was referring to the older coinage.

Prestige sets, most annual proof sets since the 60's, wisconson quarter leaf, ALL ms or pr 70 certified coins minted since 1960 (which is just about all the certified 70's out there), trade dollars, wheat cent bags, gsa dollars. That's all that come to mind right now.

To be fair I want to list some coins that I feel to be UNDERvalued. They are: proof type coins, 3 cent nickels particularly, high end proof buffalos (satins, etc), silver 3c in circ, popular key dates like 14-d cent, 55 ddo cent, 09-s and 1877 indians, large size type currency, semi key standing libs and buffalos, bu jefferson nickel sets, bu sba sets...that's all for now but I might edit this and add more later.
Just my 2 cents worth...mileage may vary :)

    World Gold ??? (nah)

After checking prices on the world gold at the ANR Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection auction all I can say is wow.
Prices were much higher than ANR's estimated values (like more than double for most).
I'm interested in getting GD's take on the prices. He told me that the prices were going premium because of the pedigree and he sure was right.
I'm curious if he picked anything up? ;)
I'm still in the hunt for one or two but I don't think I have the staying power nor the will to overpay... , no wonder they call this the hobby of kings (or could it be investors???)

Well I'll tell ya - I pretty much bid double the estimates for the coins I bid on. I was still low by 100 - 400%. :(

I would say that some PF Franklins are over priced---some of the Cents from 1909-Date.

I would also say the Mint and Proof Sets.

    Comm--most of the Dollar Comm.

    V-nickels too---

Well I think that is my list--but I still buy these coins but only when I get a good price.

They're buying the pedigree - just like I was trying to do. It was the single greatest collection in the world. I would have liked to own a small piece of it and was willing to pay a premium to do so.

I would suspect that most of the sales were to dealers - who likely already have buyers waiting in the wings to pay even yet more than the dealer paid.

"I would also say the Mint and Proof Sets."

Surely that would not include the 1980 mint sets!!!! These were made in huge numbers and only about two thirds have been destroyed over the years. This leaves about half as many as the number of still surviving 1950-D nickels which have been soaring in price and everyone seems to agree was already overpriced. Now it is true there aren't half as many collectors for nice mint state '80-D quarters as there are for the earlier nickels and perhaps there never will be. But the act remains that while one '50-D nickel generally looks very much like another that there is a huge spread in quality for the later coins. In other words there are perhaps 1 1/2 million nice '50-D nickels which will cost you $15 per coin. There are half that number of unc '80-D quarters and only 25% of them are nice.

So what will this "overpriced" '80-D cost? If you buy it in the mint set you get it for free but the catch is you have to take 7c with it. The set wholesales for less than face value. Indeed if you sell the rest of the set at current prices then then you can keep all the smaller denominations for no net cost.

This is hardly the best value among the mint and proof sets. There're some that provide very scarce coins for two or three times face value. Almost any date might contain a very valuable high grade coin worth many hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Of course you have to be able to spot such bargains and it's helpful to be familiar with the many varieties which are known to appear in these sets. There are even a couple of highly desirable varieties in the sets which have never been listed.

In my opinion most of the dates of these sets represent the opportunity of a lifetime and will not be available indefinitely. They will not be available because in many casews they are the sole source of specific coins in uncirculated (or proof) and the attrition to date has been horrendous.

Cladking---I was talking about all of them....If you have looked at the 2005 Mint Sets they have gone crazy---Now I'll agree that some dates have not done much like the 1968 and the 1969 but I also see some that are so high and I don't see much reason for the high prices.
