Hey folks, I've been wanting an exhaustive and up-to-date reference on Nabataean coins, and since that does not exist, I've decided to do it myself. I've taken to building a website that consolidates all the scholarly work, and I've thrown in a few observations of my own. You'll see that this project is only in its infancy, but I do have 19 pages of content and 2 in the catalog. I've been fiddling with this project for a month now and I'm too close to it to judge it in any objective way. If any of y'all are so bored as to read it, I'd appreciate any and all constructive criticism, no matter how picayune. (Enthusiasts of etymology will no doubt find that last sentence extremely clever. ) Nabataean Numismatics Feel free to throw your rotten tomatoes in this thread.
Thanks for the resource. I sent my 6.25 cents worth to your email but want to point out that this hobby would be a much better place if more people would take the time to share as you have done here. Thanks! One I missed: Early on in the game I had a links page and soon decided it was more trouble than it was worth. Some places won't let you be linked from their site if you link to their competition. Keeping up with sites I had linked to only to find they went dead made it necessary to spend more time updating the links page than I thought it was worth so I removed the page. At the time, my pages were big enough that I did not need people to offer reciprocal links and I avoided offending people by omitting their page by not having any links. In your case, I might offer links to other Nabataean pages but not to all coins in general. I do wish someone would undertake a comprehensive, indexed links page for ancient coin sites. It would be a lot of work to be done correctly. If you really want to get in hot water, not only have a links page but add a short critical review of the site to which you are linking. It would be a good project for someone with free time but no confidence in their level of expertise in the coins themselves.
Doug, thank you for taking the time to email me. I will incorporate your suggestions as soon as I can.
IMHO, a very worthwhile project, thanks for taking on the task. Unfortunately right now it seems the text of the pages aren't loading up for me. I only see the images. I'm using Safari on my phone, which admittedly is a rather lame way to be trying to look at a numismatics website. I'll check it out again later on my laptop.
My wife has the same problem on her phone, using Safari. At some point I'll investigate how to make it Safari-friendly.
Very nice work, John. From experience building a website of my own for my Taler collection, this is a good way to capture and consolidate information and showcase the coins. For me, managing and updating the site has become an extension of the hobby. Enjoy!
Atta-boy, JA => keep-up the sweet non-profit work/info ... ... man, I find it hard enough to find spare-time to merely buy and post my coins!! (ummm, do you work and/or have a life as well?) ... you must be a very efficient dude, my coin-friend (again => keep-up the great work) ... "maybe" when I retire, I'll find enough spare time to a) learn all of your techy-moves and b) find something useful to say (again, "maybe" is the key word) You rock, brother Ummm, usually I only post this pic for Doug, but in this case I believe that you're worthy!!
One side feature you may want to watch for is that you might develop a reputation as an expert in that field. This can be good (ticket to fame) but I did once have a dealer at a show refuse to sell me a Septimius Severus coin in his trays because (as he said) if I wanted it, he must have missed something. I don't think he is still in business. If he never sold to anyone who knew more than he did, he probably made few sales.
The state of scholarly inquiry into Nabataeans is so thin that surprisingly, I'm already considered an expert on them, by no less than a few very experienced collectors at FORVM. I have no pretensions of being anything but an amateur enthusiast, but it's not enough for me to collect coins casually. I feel the need to delve into the minutia of Nabataeans, as you do with Severus. The process of research and composition is as much of the hobby to me as buying coins.
oh wow, awesome JA. I see several coin on there I remember you posting, and many I don't. all of those on there so far your coins? well, congrats to you. i'll have you bookmarked for sure. "nabatean" coin is still on my list, i'll include one in chrsmat71 's fall coin surge.
No, not at all. Many of them are from CNG. I couldn't possibly afford to buy all those coins, especially the rare silver.
oh ok, i bet most of the ones with a black background are your coins then...most of them look familiar. i think this one is my favorite.... http://www.nabataeannumismatics.com/protocoin2.html
Yeah, the larger sized overstrikes are rare. Curiously, the dealer selling that coin did not list the dimensions, or maybe it would have been bought before I saw it. When he emailed me the weight and size, I snagged it up.
