I need help from all of the experts in here.It is from the time of Louis XIV and has the name Auguste Robert De Pomereu on the obv. and REGIMEN VNDE OMNIA (not necessarily in that order :)).Looks like brass, definitely not gold.I don't even know which side is the reverse.

This could be a brass jeton or card counter.Ian may be able to help you regarding this.

It's a jeton - Robert De Pomereu was in charge of the Army of Brittany, Bourbonnais & Auvergne. He was also a member of the Council of State and the Royal Council of Finances.

I found a record of one of these dated 1682 that was sold for about $150 some years ago.

So what exactly is a jeton? Is it some kind of medal or token?

This jeton is from a municipal series `Prevots des Marchands'. Basically the jeton commemorates his third election as Provost of Paris (His first election was in 1677). These are usually found in silver (argent) and copper (cuivre). The copper ones are sometimes found in `cuivre jaune' (literally `yellow copper') as well as plain copper.

This one is in good nick, but in yellow copper it's value is significantly less than it would be had it been silver. However in 1991 Victor Gadoury sold one (cuivre jaune) in similar condition in his fixed price catalogue for 100 francs, roughly $15. To be honest, this is roughly what they fetch on ebay today. I have the 1682 one of him in silver. It has a city view reverse as opposed to the Paris arms. I also have one of him in `cuivre jaune' dated 1678 which has his bust obverse as opposed to his coat of arms / Paris arms reverse.

1683 saw a different jeton issued (his 4th election as Provost). All in all an interesting series as it documents the various `lord provosts' from 1603 right up to the revolution.

If you ever want to know more concerning jetons, let me know.
