Looks like it could be an Indian Tanka. Here is a link with some pictures which look something like yours. Bone http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&lr=&q=tanka coin&btnG=Search&sa=N&tab=wi
Dumanyu, this looks like a coin from one of the Indian Princely States. As to which one,I don't know. Aidan.
You might post the picture on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/southasia-coins/ for the experts there to identify.
Smart folks at that group, the only draw-back is it takes several weeks to get approved for membership. If Dumanyu would allow me I might try posting the pic there for him. Take Care B
Bone, If you'd like to post the pics of the coin on that website feel free. I'd really be interested in what they say. Fred WINS# 616
Bone, I happen to work with an older gentleman from India, so I'm going to ask him about it tomorrow as well, so I'll let you know if he knows anything, but please continue with what you're doing. Fred
I got this just now. ??????????????????? This is a coin of Nasir al-Din Mahmud I, Sultan of Gujarat (1458/9 - 1511). He was the greatest of the Gujarat sultans and his coins are varied and plentiful both in silver and copper. His gold coins are much scarcer. Your coin reads: obv. nasir al-dunya wa'l din (abu'l fath) rev. mahmud shah bin muhammad shah al-sultan. ??????????????????????????????????????????? Take Care B
