Hold it closer to your computer, I can't quite make out the details. Just kidding! Post a picture and we will try to identify it.
Definitely see an S mint mark. So we can rule out Carson City, New Orleans, Philadelphia or any of the others. Progress was made today. BTW If you click on the picture it gets BIGGER Where do you live? Could be Spanish, appears to be a crest on the second picture.
Does not look much different than these: http://www.newworldtreasures.com/shipwreck.htm If it is a shipwreck coin it wouldn't look much different than those do. If it WAS it would be gold/silver so check to see if it's magnetic and if it's not then take it to a pawn shop have them test the gold
Did some research. IF it's spanish that mint mark was ONLY used by the SANTA FE DE BOGOTÁ mint. The coins they minted which I've found so far do have the same characteristics as yours. MANY were lost in the Atocha shipwreck of 1622. http://www.melfisher.com/Library/AtochaCoin/Mint.asp I'll try doing some more research.
Wow. It does look like the Mexico one. Thank you so much! We're very curious as my son thinks he found treasure in our backyard in Connecticut!
If it it sticks to a magnet it is a copy. I remember seeing these in gift shops in Florida on vacations.
