I sold this coin over 17 years ago only to purchase again recently. Looks to me like an early provincial from a coastal city or island but could be Greek also. At 12mm there is not a lot of legend but it is mostly intact. I have not had any luck other than the large M on obverse. It is also a very thick 5mm and weighs 3g. The Capricorn is over a trident? and represented with more detail than most with dorsal fins and a beard? Been through WW a couple of times, Acsearch.... Interested in your opinions.

Interesting coin. Is the reverse legend WN? That should narrow it down.

It's a tough one, at least for me! I agree with WN on the reverse, and WN or VN on the obverse. So many city names end with WN so that doesn't help much.

At first I thought the obverse was a Thracian client king but upon closer examination, the bust appears to have three turrets so perhaps it's Tyche.

Using various combinations of this information in the usual databases didn't produce any similar coins... as you've already discovered.

Looks like it might require tedious digging through old references to find it. Or maybe Ken or Ardy will recognize it :)

Wow! Just checking on my phone and is the color off on my laptop or what? Thanks for looking TIF and Thoedosius. As much as I am wishing to ID this coin I also am drawn to coins that probably will remain unidentified. As for the WN on reverse I will definatly look into. I had been looking at it from the other way, facing out. Still think it is a large M on obverse, maybe MA...

I mistyped my first post (or otherwise had a senior moment) and meant to say I think the obverse is _VW (maybe ΩVW?), not WN. Although you're right, it could be written the other direction: MA(or delta or lambda)something

As for the mystery, I agree... it is fun to have one or two of these chronic question mark coins. Someday you'll find out what it is :)
