I attended a small coin show this weekend. As I was going through a dealers box of slabbed Morgans and I noticed this piece. This is the VAM 1 pitted reverse which is a Hot 50 VAM. I don't normally mess with VAM dollars unless they are Hot 50 coins. Here is more info on the VAM: http://www.vamworld.com/1885-P+VAM-1A Checking the population report on this coin there are only 4 MS65's graded and 1 MS66. This would be the 5th MS65 once I send it back in for a reholder and variety attribution. I was able to buy this coin at 90% of greysheet from the dealer so I got a pop 4 coin for just a pinch more then $100. Things like this don't happen often but from time to time they do.
Nice Pictures and Congratz on the find! How did you know that was a VAM w/ Pitted reverse? Did you bring a list with you or was that something you looked up prior to going to the coin show? -Shrek
From years of VAM searching I have a few pieces in my head that I always look for. Mostly hot 50 VAM's. It's easier for me personally to memorize them and hunt that way. Sometimes when you pull out a VAM book around a dealer they get a little sketchy... for some reason dealers don't like to know when they are getting cherrypicked...
