Given the popularity of Roman Republic coins on here, I thought I'd post up my (few) Roman Republic coins as well. It's not an area I'm really into so my collection isn't very good, so please try not to laugh (or at least not too much)

Double-headed Janus with prow reverse (really want an upgrade of this, since they are very old, big, and hefty).

Smaller cousin of the above, I want to say Rome mint but from my limited research it seems a lot of these were struck in Sicily so it probably is from the latter.

My first ever Republican coin, under L. Rubrus Dossenus.

    Gaius Julius Caesar, Roman Republic

    AR Denarius
Obv: Diademed head of Venus, facing right
Rev: Aeneas walking left, carrying Anchises and the Palladium, CAESAR in right field
Mint: Military mint traveling with Caesar, in North Africa (struck 47-46 BC)
    Ref: RSC 12, Crawford 458/1, Sydenham 1013

If I ever do decided to go for a specific area within Republican coins I'd like to focus on the early bronzes and/or denarii struck around the time of the Spartacus rebellion (73-71 BC).

Sorry for the lack of full attributions. I have them in my Excel but, besides for Caesar, they are not in a format where I can simply copy-and-paste them.

Sweet collection. Unfortunately my RR collection is only 4 coins at the moment. Keep us posted when you do decide to add a few of those sweet RR bronzes.

Yea you know when you don't collect Roman Republic specifically, even then one can't help but to acquire one from time to time.

Since so many Flavian coins copy RR types, I never tire of seeing them. Very nice VK!

Nice coins! I'm not going to share anything as everyone here has already seen most of my collection probably, but my entire collection is posted on the site linked in my signature

Most likely Rome mint on both of your bronzes. I don't think any fully-anonymous types were struck in Sicily except the late-Second Punic War-era half-weight overstrikes struck in Sicily, Southern Italy or Sardinia(see https://www.academia.edu/15757344/A...f_Roberto_Russo_Witschonke_van_Alfen_eds_2013 ) and were likely either small change to use in military camps or as a replacement for the local small change in the regions as all are either overstruck on local bronzes or earlier Roman bronzes. It's possible that the corrosion and wear have obscured a symbol on one of your bronzes, but even then, the lion's share of both anonymous and symbol bronzes were struck in Rome.

Nice collection. Why focus? Just buy them all. :p But the early denarius coins does look really nice. Thinking about picking some up myself.

Hey, I thought you were focusing on the barbarian hoards at Rome's gate. Not a bad collection of RR. Some I need and/or want.

Nice collection! It shows you really can collect an interesting variety of RR types on a budget. My favourite here is the L. Rubrus Dossenus - the honest wear and toning adds to its appeal.
I don't collect RR, but I do have a JC (Venus/Aeneas) which I've posted before, and I'll probably sell when i get a JC portrait. I also have a Janus/prow which is a classic coin that every ancient collection should include.

I do like the L. Rubrus Dossenus the most too.
Nice start for someone not especially interested in them. I bet the bug is in there though : you will get more and more of them.

They are poisonous I guess :
I don't collect RR coins aswell, then find myself having a mere 40 of them and say "Oh, well, that's nice" and just wanting more but still not collecting them specifically. :)

Same case here, don´t collect them but have a few. Besides, how not to love them all the same?

    I like your Dossenus, BTW.

Nice VK! You mentioned that you had a few RR's in a prior thread. Those are nice!

We are touching here on what I consider a natural part of collecting. I once was a more specialized collector than I am now. I have always had some special interest but, over the years, I have had enough different special interests that my collection started to look more like a generalist gathering. I have visited Probus, Magnentius, Republicans and a dozen other specialties but none to the degree I did with the Eastern Septimius. However, in the last few years, I have added ten Republicans for every Septimius simply because that is what I found available. There are many wonderful coins out there that I don't have but finding ones that I find interesting and different withing a narrow specialty becomes harder as the collection grew. Maybe my specialty has always been what is currently available that spoke to me. I have never understood those who build a specialist collection only to sell it off and build another different one. I keep them.

There was a time I had a problem at shows knowing what to say when asked what I collect. Truth was 'coins I like at prices I can afford'. Telling that to a dealer is pointless. I could not say I collected Eastern mint Septimius because, when that was my interest, many dealers did not know how to recognize them. My current fad of choice is the class coins with some technical oddity certainly including errors but not excluding 'different' hair styles or things that are just hard to describe. I envy those of you who know what you want to buy next. I have absolutely no idea what the next coin that comes my way will be.

Whereas I have a more or less definite plan as to what I'll buy next - my missing rulers up until 238AD (which is really Pescennius Niger, Gordian II, Antinous and some rarer empresses). After that, I'm not sure where to go. I don't have a lot of interest - other than to complete the set - in some later missing rulers like Julian of Pannonia, Alex of Carthage, Martinian or Domitius Domitianus. Their obverse styles and reverse types are dull (to me) and too similar to other rulers of the same period. So who knows where this hobby will take me?

Very nice and varied collection @ValiantKnight !!

All I know for sure is that my next coin will be an 'ancient' LOL

But probably 'Greek' considering all the RR denarii I have recently picked up.

I am. The barbarians found a few old RR coins during their raids and gave them to me :D
Yeah I think I had wanted a budget one just to have this famous type. My general interest in Republicans isn't strong enough to make me want to buy an upgrade though.
