Before I started the business, and was still a collector at heart, I would occasionally get rolled coins with my paycheck, but never find a thing . . . really. Probably because I didn't do it consistently . . . sort of like playing the lottery. Anyway, in 2003 I thought the mint might curtail mintages of minor coins a bit, and decided I'd try to snag a few shrink-wrapped rolls of new coinage at the bank at lunchtime, so I requested rolls of nickels, dimes and half dollars. I thought State Quarters were a flash in the pan, and avoided them like the plague. The teller at the drive up took my money, and handed me paper rolled coins, so I knew I was probably not getting what I wanted, but I politely accepted what I asked for and drove off, thinking I'd wasted my time. That night, after work, I remembered I had the rolls, and decided to spend a few minutes checking them before re-depositing them, just in case. I went through the nickels first . . . I don't know why not the halves first, but I didn't. Nothing. Dimes. Nothing. First roll of halves. Nothing Second roll of halves . . . 20 circulated Walkers . . . yup, every single coin was a Walker. Loved that, I did. With several more rolls of half dollars on the table, I ripped through them like a cat through a bag of goldfish. Nothing. The next day I went back to the bank and, without turning in the rolls from the day before, I obtained another $100 more rolls. Nothing. I did the same again several more times, with identical results. Someone probably cleaned out grandma's closet and deposited all of the rolled coins without looking through them. In retrospect, I should have asked for more rolls of dimes and quarters, but was so focused on the halves at the time, I completely forgot. Doubtless, someone else was pleasantly surprised with one or more rolls of those. One shot deal. Never before and never again. Wierd.
I need to go to the bank soon. I have some reserve money im not allowed to spend till November, so I can get coins with that though.
Theres 20 halves in a roll, if they were all walkers, wouldn't you of realized it the second you were handed them?
You've got to understand 3 things . . . (1) Despite a roll of Walkers weighing differently than a roll of clad halves, I probably accepted the rolls in 2 hands, likely in a hurry to get back to work, and wouldn't have noticed the difference in weight at that time, (2) These were re-rolled coins in the flat paper rolls that get folded over on the ends, and (3) My hope was for shrink-wrapped coins dated 2003. Since I didn't believe I'd received what I was after, I didn't bother even unfolding the ends of the rolls to check the end coins in the truck. It wasn't until that evening that I had my very first look. Frankly, it was well worth the wait!
