Some of you may have noticed I haven't been quite as active over the past year as I was previously. Life and finances got in the way, and I wasn't able to devote as much time or money to this hobby as I would have liked. I'm hoping to become more active again this year.

However, I was able to make one nice purchase. Guess the Grade and Overton. The grade here is really tricky - remember that early Bust Halves are struck with quite low relief. This O# should be incredibly easy if you can spot the two unique features on this coin.

    Looks like O-104.

To me the coin looks weakly struck and appears to have retained some luster. Love the color.
I might be WAY off but I would put it at XF-40. :shy:

I have never collected CBH's and the only Overton I know is a window, but initial impression of the coin is that the wear on the obverse seems much worse than that on the reverse, which usually means the obverse wear is partly strike related. The reverse looks XF, maybe even low AU, so I went to Heritage looked at the XFs for 1808 looking for a mushy obverse and chose that Overton number.

    XF45 O-104

    Attractive coin.

    Great Addition to your collection.

    Good purchase.

These are three different things, in my opinion.... Good Purchase depends on the price paid. I'll tell you, I'm not sure this was a good purchase.

This was an attractive coin that makes a great addition to my collection.

14th star above liberty's head, closed AM, die strike on last A in America, obverse slightly off center to the left closing denticles. VF-20, hope I'm wrong, in your favor of course!

I agree it is a purdy coin... that's why I bought it.

But... look again at the headband between RandT... And just above the branch on the reverse.... Clear giveaways for the Overton.

I see it now. The wear pattern and strike look much more like the 108. I have to lower my grade to a 40 for great eye appeal.

    O 104
Gotta grade the weakly struck obverse by the luster, guessing AU50.

    Great guesses everybody.

Overton was O-104, R3. Super easy if you spotted the die gouge in the headband obverse, and the gouge at the branch under the claws reverse.

Grade.. a bit trickier. Most of you guessed AU-50. And you were right. PCGS AU-50, CAC. The strike is weak - but the relief on these early halves is lower than later ones. As somebody mentioned, the luster is what clues you in. Luster on this is better than anything you'd expect from an EF-40 or 45.

Obviously, I bought it for the color. I paid way too much.

Looking for the overton, I spent too much time looking at the strike than I did with the luster.
I see plenty of luster for a 50.
