I just finished up two days negotiating price on this, and was totally excited to get it. It is PCGS slabbed. Anyone want to guess the grade?
NICE--I was just reading how that out of the mintage of 1884-CC Morgans only about 50,000 are slabbed in any grade by the top 3....so I think that is pretty good.... Taking that in mind...and the toning too....MS64PL.... Speedy
Speedy, that's interesting. I am trying to purchase lower mintage coins these days, and relative to mintage (and taking into account a half dozen major melt offs of silver dollars) I imagine that many of these morgans are in fact more scarce than the mintage reflects. Especially the PL examples, which are really few and far between. It took me a few weeks to find this one at the right price... I'll post the answer later on the actual grade.
MS-65PL. Nice toning and Proof-Like appearance. I only say 65 instead of 64 is that there dont appear to be many contact marks on the coin.
While I will wait to show the grade, I will say I think the coin is accurately graded, though would have a good shot at moving up a grade if cracked out and resubmitted a number of times. It is a fairly PQ coin for the grade. I definately has that could be X or Y look about it...
Well, here it is: PCGS MS64DMPL I bought it for a slight premium for the nice toning, but basically got it for 64DMPL money. I am happy as I think that this coin is very PQ for 64. I'm not going to bother cracking it and playing the game, 'cause no ones gonna own this but me (until I give it to my kids). I think it appears to have a solid shot at 65DMPL, in which case I got a steal. Otherwise, I got what I wanted.
Way to go....I'm going to say the photos made me not say DMPL No really....here is what I saw that made me not say the DM in PL...on the back the eagels wings seem spoty...that may be the photo...I thought for DMPL the wings should have more frosting on them.....but then all I had was the photos...you and PCGS had the coin IN hand...and I trust that! Speedy
64 DMPL is my guess. Tough to say PL or DMPL based on the photos, though. Nice coin, in any event...Mike
REally clear and deep mirrors, with the toning just sort of 'laying across' the mirrow without reducing its luster. It is the first truly DMPL morgan I've had, to be honest. I'm really happy with it. I wish they still made coins like these... to have circulation strikes that can be so mirrored... simply fantastic. The pics that the coin shop takes are sometimes a bit dark. They took it in low light to show the mirror, but lost the frost. Also got some reflection from the plastic.
