After reading the great post on Lysimachus that Curtisimo wrote back in April, I really wanted to pick up one of the coins Lysimachus with the deified portrait of Alexander. When I saw this coin at auction the obverse really caught my eye and I decided to have a go at it. Needless to say, I was pleased to win. Lysimachus AR Drachm 305-281 B.C. Magnesia on the Maeander mint (19mm, 4.26 g, 12h) Struck circa 297/6-282/1 BC. Obv: Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon. Rev: Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, transverse spear in background; maeander pattern to outer left, monogram to inner left. Deposit on reverse. Thompson 117 Feel free to add and coins of Lysimachus, the Diadochi, or coins that you were inspired to purchased by members of CoinTalk.
Great coin! Some people may not realize that if you want a portrait coin of Alexander III, you need a tet of Lysimachus, NOT Alexander III. The lifetime tets of Alex are of course wonderful, but that's Hercules on the obverse of those.
Very nice Drachm @TheRed ! I agree with @John Anthony ... you cannot get a Portrait of Alex III unless you get a Lysimachos! Great coin @TheRed. I really like the style of the obverse. Very beautiful example The Alexander III portraits of Lysimachus are pretty sweet, right! Thanks for the shout out I had a fun time learning about this type when I got mine from JA. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/is...at-looked-like-a-diadochi-tetradrachm.294408/
Hmm, it seems everyone has a 'purdier' example....but I am fond of my flawed and well traveled friend
