I just received a Silver hemiobol. 460-455 BC. (0.3gm) of Athens. The detail is really very good, but my photos don't do it justice. I also took a shot of it compared to other coins in my collection, and it is way smaller than even my Panama Pill. It is hard to imagine even carrying coins this small around. It is 6mm X 7mm. Do they come any smaller than this? Jony

That is a quite decent specimen. Any Athens coin under obol is less common but the real rarity in the series is the 1/8th obol which I don't have to show. You will also see it listed as a hemitartemorion. There are other cities with more common tiny coins. My smallest coins weigh about 0.1g but I do have a Syracuse hexas that is a bit laminated so it is down to 0.05g. In other threads I have bemoaned the fact that my only child has no interest in my coins. That is not quite true. She has always said that she would keep my obols and under collection. There is a special appeal to these little things even to a non collector.
That is a very cool page. I have an obol from MILETUS but it is almost 10mm. I hadn't realized there were so many places that had them so small. It really amazes me the detail they put in their coins with what they had to work with. My wife (not a collector) is amazed at the quality and the fact that most are relatively inexpensive for something over 2000 years old.
