That applies to both the coins and the photography. Had gold dropped half its value in the intervening nine years, or are the coins different sizes
Photographs are from the auction house.. I wish I could do photo that good . I will try my own in the next week. Coins are different sizes. 7 Guilden=4.97g and I think the 14 Gulden is twice that.
You realize of course that this means I have to hate you now I mean really, one was bad enough but ya got both of 'em !!!! You lucky dog - gorgeous coins !!
Silver Eagle The more I look at those coins the more I like them. When it came to the Gulden I thought GDJMSP only collected the dutch man in the pajama coins or as I believe Old Dan once stated, long johns. Thanks for posting the aution house and I hope all is well with you and yours after the storms and LSU losing and all.
Are you kiddin ?? A knight on horseback - with a raised sword - on a gold coin ?? It don't get no better 'n that I have been literally lusting after both of those coins for several years now. Yup - the green eyed monster is firmly perched upon my shoulder - SCREAMING in my ear Besides - they're wearin long johns
I have seen the silver versions of these coins - the 2-1/2 Gulden, which is also better known as the Rijksdaalder (comes from the German 'Reichsthaler',& is the source word for the English 'Rixdollar',which was a denomination used in both Ceylon & the Cape of Good Hope.).My command of the Dutch,Flemish,& Afrikaans languages are very limited, however. Aidan.
You're mixing up your coins Aidan - the silver version of that coin is the ducaton. The Rijksdaalder is a coin of smaller diameter & less weight than the ducaton. The reverse of both coins is similar, but on the obverse of the Rijksdaalder the knight is standing with a shield at his feet.
Andy, Whether he knows it or not GDJMSP is my gold coin mentor !!! Photos of his fabulous gold coin collection are what sparked my interest and got me going down this path. Although my gold coin collection is not as specialized and extensive as his (yet), his collection and opinions have helped sharpen my eye and thus shape my collecting habits; even for the gold I collect oustide of his speciality. Like this one: and this one: 1961 Iceland 500 Kronur NGC MS-67 Eliasberg Collection Pedigree And yes I also like those little soldiers in long johns just not as much as GDLMSP (YET!!!) I think I prefer the CALVARY !!!!
Well I got news for ya silvereagle - watching & helping you work on your collection gives me even more pleasure than working on my own Except when ya go an make me jealous of course Just kiddin pal - I love to help others. Nothing gives me more personal satisfaction.
man... all my world gold is common stuff... nice one! as i am currently not in the know in world gold coins i have been sticking with "common" coins that i can purchase for around melt value. Still fun to get a french gold coin thats over 150 years old in BU for a couple bucks over melt. all the american coins end up being multiples more then their gold content, even common pieces... sigh. Not to change the subject, but whats the best single book to get that covers world gold coins ( AKA not american ) I look at all your pics and get the gold fever, I want to know more! thanks in advance!
Hey nothing wrong with that, common stuff is the platform from which to build from, I have . That said, be prepared to pay quite a bit more than melt value for these types and grades!!! I have "The Standard Catalog of World Gold Coins" 5th edition based on Krause and Mishler's work. It covers coins from the 1500's thru 2004. But it has no color photos.
Silvereagle, last night I was looking thru my gold coin catalogs for a bit and was admiring the 1961 Iceland 500 Kronur more then any other coin. It was also the first time that I had seen it. For Iceland was never on my buy list but the coin really struck me. I was thinking that it was to modern for me and I only buy modern for bullion value but what a strong and culturally protrayed coin it is. I really liked it and thought what a great coin to have. Funny that you posted it today. I also like the braiding in the young Victoria's hair. I once thought about the British gold SOVEREIGNS as a collection series to make for if I remember correctly they are the same size as the french 20 gold francs and there is of course the joint history linkage. However, maybe I should compare the prices to the Aussie gold coins and/or the British gold that was minted in Sidney since the detail seems to be as good before going in that direction. and yes I have heard that Gary knows a thing or two about coins. I never forgot how impressed the National Dealer was with GDJMSP's listed purchases. He had given me some leads in the past as well. Good guy I guess but the human bones in the hat is what got me worried about that mountain man. I heard from no one that they may be the fingers of other collectors who got their hands on coins he wanted! Seriously, I hope you continue to share your collection.
