In line with my decision to (where possible) collect better examples of the coins presently in my collection, I recently picked up this Constans. I didn't need it, because I already have 10 or a dozen of them, (haven't we all), but they are all 'lower grade' coins. ROMAN EMPIRE, CONSTANS, Emperor AD 337-350. Centenionalis (Bronze 3.7 grams, 19.40mm) Obverse: DN CONSTANS P F AVG, His diademed draped and cuirassed bust right. Reverse: FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Constans standing right on galley, holding labarum and phoenix, Victory at the rudder. TES 'Alpha' in exergue. RIC VIII. Thessalonica 120 A (Seller's Photos) Please show your Constans . . . . . .
CONSTANS AE2 OBVERSE: D N CONSTANS P F AVG - Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust left, holding globe REVERSE: FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Constans standing left holding chi-rho banner in right and resting left on shield, two bound captives wearing Phrygian helmets standing to left, ASIS in ex Struck at Siscia 348-350 AD 3.93g, 20mm RIC VIII 224
I like that reverse and the obverse isn't too bad either. I only have two in my collection: Roman Imperial: Constans (337-350 CE) BI Centenionalis, Siscia (RIC-218c) Obv: D N CONSTA-NS P F AVG; Pearl-diademed, draped bust of Constans left, holding globe in left hand Rev: FEL • TEMP • REPA-RATIO; Soldier holding spear pointing upwards and leading barbarian right from hut under tree; BSISRM in exergue ex-Bridgnorth Hoard Roman Imperial: Constans (337-350) Æ Follis, Siscia (RIC VIII-100) Obv: CONSTAN-S PF AVG; laurel and rosette-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right Rev: GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS; two soldiers holding spears and shields with one standard between them, chi-rho on banner; ESIS, dot-in-crescent in exergue
Everyone needs a Constans from the early Siscia issue with genitive case obverse 'of Constans Blessed Caesar' Of course there are hundreds of Fel Temp Reparatio varieties for Constans.
The R here is as close as a keyboard may come to that Siscian language letter in the mintmark. That is a very nice coin! RIC may say it is common but they are not always that clear.
I haven't encountered this one before. What is the RIC number for the first one? The second coin is actually really nice! Very crisp!
RIC 113 page 211 Arles The feature of note on this one is the armillary sphere decoration on the globe.
Nice one, TC, I especially like the Victory at the rudder. A two-standard CONSTANTIS BEA C from Siscia.
Wow, fantastic OP-score, Topcat ... congrats, dawg (cat) Ummm, sadly this is my only Constans example (but I love it) ...

The OP was a small "galley" piece. In Britain the galley type was already imitated before the size was reduced. Constantius II full-size imitation from Britain. AE23-20. Large! 4.60 grams. A bold and impressive full-sized imitation. "galley" type.
A very attractive and interesting array of posts!! Well, my upgrade in this area (of Constans) was this modest reduced follis with a nice portrait.....
