I'm a sucker for these Gordian and Tranquillina marriage issues! Post anything you feel is relevant!

It's coins such as this that find my eye wandering from my precious Flavians. Superb!

I've yet to add a G III bronze but when I do it'll be one of these types.

I don't have a comparable coin, so please enjoy this Hymn to Nemesis, written by Mesomedes of Crete, a freedman of the emperor Hadrian (the musical accompaniment is based on original musical notation preserved in the manuscript of the text) :

That is a great example of the 4 and a half assaria denomination. I also like the way the obverse centration dimple and raised compass dot are right next to each other making it a very educational coin.

Most of the 4 1/2 coins I have seen are like yours with the two letters split across the fields. There are a few of these with the two letters Δ< ligate.

There is also a Tomis one and a half (>A). Mine is a Philip II. I do not know if they come in other ruler's names.

As I understand the theory, the half denominations are thought to have allowed paying a moneychanger transaction fee converting foreign currency but I forget exactly how they believe it worked.

Thank you so much for your insightful comments.

I bought it because it's the only example I have of the 4.5 assaria denomination. I plan to do more research on it.
