I'll start with today's acquisitions in the picture roll. An 1834 capped bust half that is beautiful in comparison to the rest of mine and slated to be an upgrade in my type set. 1893 Columbian Expo half, nothing flashy for now but it fills a hole in the type album for now. 1890-S Morgan (MS-61 by Anacs) that will be broken out for my Morgan albums, and a 1996-P Washington quarter with missing clad on the obverse. That one was just in a bucket of random coins that caught my eye while sifting through it. 20240820_152420.jpg 20240820_152539.jpg 20240820_152834.jpg 20240820_152742.jpg 20240820_153309.jpg 20240820_153319.jpg 20240820_153229.jpg 20240820_153238.jpg 20240820_163240.jpg 20240820_163247.jpg

If anyone wants to fill me in on the Overton number for the capped bust, I'd appreciate it. I tried using the website referenced here a few years back but can't really nail it down.

Now onto the stuff that isn't mine. One of the trays I was looking at had this '55 DDO in it, which I thought was pretty cool! I've never seen one in person before, so this was my first time holding one. Crazy to think it's a $10k penny, but I totally get it.

While I was there, another kind gentleman came in and was talking with the shop owner when I overhead "penny struck on a dime planchet." Naturally, my ears perked up and we all started talking about it. He said he had gotten it from a bank when he cashed a check in the 90's (I believe) and has had it ever since. He found one very similar to his online and did some research. Ends up there's about 20 of them known, and the shop owner was saying it must have been a deliberately struck error by a mint employee because... well, I forget the whole explanation actually lol! But yeah, totally awesome to see some eye candy errors today! 20240820_112755.jpg 20240820_112746.jpg 20240820_112802.jpg 20240820_114533.jpg 20240820_114539.jpg

That 1955 DDO cent is amazing, I've never seen one that nice.

Here's another double denomination error one cent on a struck dime.

Here's a link to a couple videos of my capped bust half. Pictures and videos still don't do it justice. I'm terrible at photography.

I have a 66 DDO that I love but is quite chocolate brown. Sure doesn’t pop like that one….. I read a piece about those 55 DDO’s a while back. Most of the 55 DDO’s began life in cigarette packs. The cigarette vending machines didn’t give change in the day so the cigarette manufacturers would put the change inside the cigarette pack and most of the 55 DDO’s can trace their lineage back to being change inside a cigarette pack in a vending machine.

Somewhere in my dusty memory banks there is a memory of reading that a lot of those cigarette machines were in Buffalo NY.
