Bought this today at my local coin store. I noticed that the reverse is in better shape than the obverse.

Neat coin! Can you imagine what that coin might have seen during its life? Where it has been? What it was used to buy?

This question pertains to this '24 Peace here. If the obverse of a coin is in much better shape than the reverse (or vice versa) say by a large margin, if possible, how is the coin graded? What grade is it given?

Opinions on this will vary, as some older members will remember when a coin was graded by some TPG companies ( such as ANACs) with 2 separate grades. This has changed for the most part to one grade ( helps making pricing guides).

If both sides are very close, I grade by the most important side, usually the obverse, such as 1955/55 DDO Lincoln, although if the reverse is the main importance, such a 3 Legged buffalo, I would use that. If they are far apart, I usually grade by the lesser graded side. One seller told me many grade by the best side when selling, and the worse side when buying. :)

    Welcome to the forum!

The grading guides dictate that all coins must be graded by the worst side.
