New collector just figuring out what I want to collect. So I am pretty much grabbing everything that I can. :D Got this coin last week and wanted to know what you more experienced copper folks think of it. Photos shot through the 2x2.

    Leadfoot there is no spoon

First off, I like the color of the coin. Lots of meat left too.

Two things concern me about the coin. First, the white stuff that appears to be clinging to the coin and most visible around the devices on the obverse. Second, the appearance of hairlines on the reverse. Both suggest some type of cleaning, but hardly definitive from only a photo.

Indeed a nice coin, but on the reverse it does look like it's been cleaned. Inside the wreath.

I am NOT an expert, AT ALL. :) The stuff clinging to the coin is light green, and I assumed that is was verdigris or how ever you spell it. :) The reverse has some nasty scratches above the ribbon for sure. There are some lighter ones in other parts of the reverse as well. I got this as part of an old collection I purchased from the daughter of the collector. It was among 4 other IH's but this one is the best... I think :)

I would like to use this coin to learn a few things in particular. I would guess this coin would be a "problem" coin, yes? The stuff sticking to it is corrosion? Best thing, if anything, to be done about it? Could someone that is experienced with these older coppers please help me familiarize myself with some grading standards please? Thanks all.

I should also say that I didn't pay much at all for this coin. I do not have any emotional attachment or anything either. :) So feel free to be VERY honest. :) Thanks!

Not a problem coin at all. It's yours, keep it. With a coin I dont always look at the value. It's the history it carries. As far as grading goes that just comes in time and a lot of reading / hands on experience. Some people have different opinions when it comes to grading as you can see in some of these threads. It's whatever catches your eye at the moment.

Start here. You can learn quite a bit.

    hamman88 Spare some change, sir?

It had a light cleaning. As long had it wasn't much money, its not a big deal, still a nice coin.

Cool link Mikes3, thanks! Anyone care to venture a guess as to the grade? I really have no idea what I am doing, it looks better than a lot of those photos but do I really know what I am looking for? Prob not....LOL Or does it even grade with the cleaning? Thanks everyone!

Your coin is in a very nice state of preservation. I would say MS64, but I would probably send it to NCS to be professionaly restored by removing the verdigris and then to NGC to be graded. The thing that would hold me back from submission would be the cost factor and it is perfectally acceptable the way it is to me. It is just a matter of money. If it is something you could afford then get it restored and slabbed, if not, no big deal as it is very attractive already.

Nice coin, it appears to have an old cleaning and it has re-toned over the years. It's wild that you just got a 1907 as I just did too at a coin show 2 weeks ago. Here's mine, its certified as PCGS MS-64 RB.

    Wow Coinguy, NICE PICKUP!!!

Thank you everyone for the info, figured I would take some better photos outside of the 2x2. Let me know if you want some large pics sent to you for review. Thanks again everyone, I really love these old coppers and am excited to hone my skills in evaluating them! :)

Nice pics, yeah fields around the ONE CENT and on the wreath appear to have been lightly cleaned, I can see some hairlines. But the obverse looks nice.

It is a nice coin, but I would say AU based off the photo's. I say AU because it could just be the cleaning making it look like wear - and so I would net it with AU Details. Still a nice coin and verdicare may solve the verdigris problem. I also recommend this grading guide from Rick Snows website.

I agree 100% AU, although because of the condition of the reverse some may downgrade it to XF-45. Rick Snows website is very helpful in determining the grade of Indian Head Cents and tells you the details to look for pertaining to each grade, very informational.. Nonetheless it is a nice coin..
